The Fairfax County Police Department offers free home security inspections to any resident in Fairfax County. The Washington Post ran a story on July 18, 2009 titled "Helping Hand on Home Security", by Gabe Goldberg. In the story, police recommended some simply things a homeowner could do to make their home more secure. Tips include: - Set up good lighting around doors, particularly back doors
- Use Motion Sensing lights on the exterior of your home
- Install double-key deadlocks on any doors with glass
- Use long wood screws to reinforce deadbolts that have strikeplates attached to the door frame
- Install window latches that allow windows to be opened only partially
